New Zealand Customs Service

Topic : How the public sector can benefit from Customs' computer system (CusMod).

Goals

  • Networked State Services
  • Co-ordinated State Agencies
  • Accessible State Services
  • Trusted State Services

Summary

This case study shows the journey from the environment in which CusMod was created, to how that environment has changed over time and what the future potential of the technology could be in terms of networked, coordinated and accessible State agencies.

The presentation will give a basic introduction to the tools of the trade used by Customs with specific focus on CusMod – Customs’ cutting edge computer system. Customs will show how CusMod started out as a Customs only tool and is now used by other agencies for a number of different purposes. Customs Comptroller Martyn Dunne will demonstrate what has been gained by working in a whole-of-government way and will share learnings and future challenges for the public sector with the audience.

The case study will focus on:

  • The tools of the trade used by Customs to achieve its vision and mission
  • How CusMod is one of the most important tools
  • How it works, why it works
  • How other agencies have used it to date
  • The potential for even greater whole-of-government involvement with CusMod, given current and future challenges from the external environment

Customs will provide a specific cross-agency example to illustrate the difference CusMod has made to Customs' interconnectedness with other agencies. Customs will also share information on expected future developments arising from demands on international travel and trade on the border and the implications it holds for other State Services.
